How I chose to live my best life
I didn’t have the best start in life.
I was born in apartheid South Africa, when the country was still
racially divided by law and when the majority of citizens were still not able
to vote. I was classified as a Colored person, meaning that I was born into a
long legacy of oppression and discrimination simply because of the color of my
skin. My parents were working class and we lived in poor, drug-riddled
communities throughout my childhood. My father worked as a book binder,
spending twelve hours a day, even on weekends, working in a factory to support
his wife and four children while my mother cared for us at home.
I had exactly the same story as a lot of other people in
South Africa who would struggle throughout their lives to barely survive.
But I wanted more. I wanted to really live the life of my
dreams, not the life that destiny seemed to
I decided to pursue the things I really wanted in life. I
realized that I had a talent for writing, learning and communication, and I
used these talents to carve out a better life for myself.

I worked incredibly hard, taking on many small jobs at
school and college in order to buy the necessities I needed and some of the
things I wanted. Because I studied hard at school, I got a full scholarship to attend
one of the best Universities in the country, and applied myself to maintain top
grades. I graduated at the top of my class in my Honours year, and kept
pursuing my dreams.
Even though people treated me differently because of my
background and I often felt like an outsider or an imposter, I decided that I
wouldn’t let my fear or insecurities hold me back. Even though life wasn’t
always fair to me, I was determined to be a success. I deserved the best in
life, and I was going to make it mine.
I’m now pursuing my PhD and work as an academic. I’m also a
bestselling author, I’ve launched successful businesses and I’m able, through my
work, to inspire students and readers daily. This is the life of my dreams, and
I’m constantly working to be even more successful. I have many goals and I’m setting
new ones regularly.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably similarly motivated
to reach your full potential and to go after your dreams. You might be facing
your own challenges to your success. Or you might even be very comfortable with

from their lives in order to find my own success.
